Maryland Announces First Information Technology Registered Apprentice Graduate

New Tech Partnership Promotes Modern Apprenticeships

BALTIMORE (Nov. 15, 2017) – Today, the Maryland Department of Labor proudly announced the state’s first graduate of an information technology (IT) Registered Apprenticeship program. The announcement was made during National Apprenticeship Week at the launch of a new partnership between the Maryland Tech Council and TranZed Apprenticeship Services, a relationship that focuses on making modern apprenticeship more accessible to Maryland companies.

“Our IT apprentice graduate shows that we are truly revolutionizing the way we address workforce development in Maryland,” said Labor Secretary Kelly M. Schulz. “The apprenticeship model works for any industry, from the skilled trades, to information technology, to biotechnology, to advanced manufacturing and is further proof that apprenticeships work, and they work for everyone.”

Steve Grega became Maryland’s first IT Registered Apprenticeship graduate after completing a 12-month training program through TranZed, while working at Cockeysville-based UTX, Inc. As is the case with all Registered Apprenticeships, the IT program combines paid employment with academic courses and on-the-job training.

“When seeking talent, companies are looking for three specific criteria: experience, training, and industry certifications. Apprentices have all of the above,” said Maryland Tech Council CEO Tami Howie. “Our members are open to apprenticeships as part of their talent acquisition and retention strategies.”

Facilitating the connection between employers and modern apprenticeships is TranZed Apprenticeship Services, Maryland’s first non-traditional Registered Apprenticeship program. The company connects businesses and job seekers to apprenticeship opportunities in technology, cyber security, digital and social media.

“Maryland has the second-highest concentration of IT companies in the nation,” said TranZed President Paul Champion. “Our new cutting edge training services, such as those provided with Cybrary and Cyber Range, allow us to equip job seekers with the skills they need to fill jobs at these companies.”

Businesses and job seekers interested in learning more about apprenticeships and how to get involved with the program should visit Maryland Apprenticeship and Training page for more information.
