Broad Industry Representation

The Steering Committee reflects the full breadth of Maryland’s horse industry and includes representatives from:

  • Department of Agriculture- Agriculture and land-based, Animal Heath, regulator & licensing stables, oversees the Maryland Horse Industry Board,  Represent horses as agriculture, land-use and agritourism 
  • Economic Development Representative - Public & private venues, jobs & workforce, business growth & investment, tourism & visitor spending, local & regional economics, statewide economic impact
  • Academic Representative - –Universities, extension, workforce training, youth programs (4H Pony Club, IEA, IHS), lesson barns, & career pathways
  • Sport, Competition & Recreation Representative – Public & private venues, licensed stables, local & international competitions, & all recreational riding
  • At Large - Equine service & supply businesses, equine health & performance services, infrastructure & operations, cross-sector perspective
  • Standardbred  – Standardbred racing, racetracks, welfare, workforce, training, horsemen, and the lifecycle management of Standardbreds
  • Breeding, Farm, Agriculture and Land Use – Horse farms, horse breeding, incentives,  land conservation, agrotourism, and rural economic development
  • Health and Welfare – Veterinarians, welfare advocates, animal health,  aftercare, horse health, safety and injury prevention, regulatory oversight, education & best practices
  • Department of Natural Resources Representative – Public venues, shared land-use, trails, public lands, natural resource, conservation, and outdoor recreation sectors
  • Secretary of State – State agencies and intergovernmental partners supporting industry coordination nationally and internationally through relations, cultural and diplomatic exchanges, interstate and intergovernmental coordination
  • Thoroughbred  Thoroughbred racing, racetracks, workforce, welfare, training, horsemen, and the lifecycle management of Thoroughbreds
  • Department of Commerce - Business development & expansion, Horse farms, equine businesses, racetracks, training centers, and service providers as commercial enterprises, job creation & workforce alignment, investment & incentives (grants, tax incentives, partnerships), marketing and tourism incentives
  • Therapeutic, Aftercare & Equine-Assisted Services Representative - Therapeutic & equine assisted programs, horse lifecycles & aftercare, horse welfare, community access & inclusion, horse and human welfare, multiple careers in a horse’s life and education
