Complaints About Banks or Credit Unions - Financial Regulation

Last reviewed/updated: August 6, 2024

Complaints about banks and credit unions should be sent to the government agency that regulates or supervises the financial institution. If your bank or credit union is in the Directory of Maryland-Chartered Financial Institutions, please proceed with submitting your complaint to our Office.

Our Office is not the primary regulator for national banks, federal credit unions, or banks and credit unions chartered in other states, and we have limited authority over those institutions, depending on the nature of your complaint.*

The chart below lists some of the banks and credit unions operating in Maryland that are federally regulated or regulated by other states. If your bank or credit union is not listed in the Maryland Directory or in the chart below, see Regulation of Banks and Credit Unions for help identifying the appropriate government agency to receive your complaint.

You may also send complaints about banks and credit unions to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) . The CFPB is a federal agency that implements and enforces federal consumer finance laws and ensures that consumer finance products are fair, transparent, and competitive.

*NOTE: Certain activity by non-Maryland chartered banks and credit unions may be subject to our Office’s jurisdiction, such as activity that violates the protections in Maryland’s consumer lending and mortgage statutes. Additionally, some banks and credit unions chartered in states other than Maryland may need to maintain a Maryland license to make installment loans, make or broker mortgage loans, or service mortgage loans.
