Unemployment Insurance Metrics - Unemployment Insurance
Summary of Unemployment Insurance Service Since March 2020
- Since the beginning of the pandemic, the Maryland Department of Labor has paid-out nearly $14.5 billion in unemployment benefits.
- Of the millions of claims received during this unprecedented time period, over 99% of those that were non-fraudulent and properly completed have been processed and received an initial determination.
- To meet this immense logistical and practical challenge, the Department has on-boarded more than 2,000 contractors, paid existing staff overtime for long periods of time, and worked around the clock to provide resolution and pay benefits to its deserving customers.
- Unfortunately, fraud continues to be a significant, consistent and ever-changing challenge that impedes the processing of honest and deserving claims.
- To date, our fraud prevention team has flagged nearly 1.8 million claimants - and 2.3 million total claims - as potentially fraudulent.
