Federal Employees: Furlough Repayment
Learn what steps to take when there’s a government shutdown, and how to repay benefits when the furlough ends.
Yes. If you receive retroactive pay from your federal government job for the period of the shutdown, the payment (your wages) will be considered back pay and you will be required to pay back any unemployment insurance benefits that you received.
You will receive a Notice of Benefit Overpayment (through your preferred communication method, which you selected when you filed an initial claim and available in the Maryland Unemployment Insurance Portal (BEACON), which will include the overpayment amount. You may request to cancel your claim by calling a claims agent at 667-207-6520, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
You can reopen your claim if there is another shutdown within 12 months of the filing of your initial claim. After 12 months or if you canceled your previous claim, you will need to establish a new claim.
Yes. Once the Maryland Division of Unemployment Insurance receives proof of your back pay wages, you will be sent a “Notice of Benefit Overpayment” indicating the overpayment amount due. Learn about repayments.
